Good Neighbor Fence Installation: Finished Cedar Styles for Austin Property Lines
Cedar Privacy and Bull Wire Fencing for Central Texas Homes
A good neighbor fence gives both yards on your property line an equal share of the fence’s finished side. FenceMaxx builds alternating panel good neighbor fences in Western Red Cedar for homeowners in Austin and the surrounding Central Texas communities. We also build cap and trim fence tops, board on board privacy fences, and bull wire and wood combination fencing for properties that call for a more open look.
Each style changes something specific about your fence, whether that’s how it looks from your neighbor’s side, how much of your yard stays private, or how polished the top line looks. Our team will help you compare them and put together a free estimate with your post and upgrade options laid out clearly. If you’re still deciding on a style, our wood and cedar fencing page also covers horizontal cedar and our other wood fence options.
Planning a Fence on a Shared Boundary
A fence on the property line is seen from two yards. On a standard privacy build, the pickets face one direction and the posts and backer rails show on the other side, so only one household gets the finished view. Our good neighbor fence alternates the direction of each panel, so each yard sees finished sections and framing sections. That makes it a natural fit when you’re replacing a fence you share with the house next door or planning the project together with your neighbor.
From there, the right style depends on what you want your fence to do. Western Red Cedar naturally shrinks and moves in Central Texas heat, so a design with overlapping boards keeps sightlines covered as the wood settles. A cedar cap adds weather protection along the top edge and gives the fence a cleaner outline, and a bull wire build keeps the view open while still marking the boundary. We’ll go over each option with you during your consultation so you end up with a fence that suits your property and the way you use it.
What Goes Into Every FenceMaxx Cedar Build
Our good neighbor, cap and trim, and board on board fences all start with Western Red Cedar pickets, which stay stable in Texas heat and humidity and resist rot naturally. The recommended post type depends on the fence design. For many of our builds, we recommend round 2 3/8-inch galvanized steel posts with three backer rails, which hold up to rot, warping, and soil moisture with less long-term maintenance than wood posts. Good neighbor fences on steel use concealed steel posts. If budget comes first, we also offer an economical build on wood posts.
We use stainless steel ring shank nails at no extra cost to help prevent discoloration caused by inferior fasteners. If you’re replacing an old wood fence, standard removal and hauling are included, and we recycle most of the materials from your project. Every installation is backed by our three-year craftsmanship warranty.
What is a good neighbor fence?
Ours is a cedar privacy fence built with alternating panels, so neither household ends up with all of the framing. It’s a different design from a fence finished on both faces to conceal the framing entirely.
Can my neighbor and I split the cost of a good neighbor fence?
Plenty of neighbors split the cost of a fence on a shared property line. We can clearly itemize each household’s contribution, and your consultant can walk you through how that works.
How soon can I stain my new cedar fence?
We recommend waiting about two to three weeks after installation so the wood has time to dry, though weather can change that timing. A high-quality penetrating stain helps protect cedar from sun, humidity, and rain. We don’t offer staining in-house, but we’re glad to refer you to trusted local staining contractors.
What posts do you use at gate openings?
We use round galvanized steel posts at gate openings. Our custom gate installation team can build a cedar gate to match.

what we do
Choose the Build That Fits Your Yard
Good Neighbor Fence
Our good neighbor fence alternates its panels from section to section, so the finished side faces each yard in turn. When you choose steel posts, concealed steel posts come standard on this design.
Cap and Trim Fence
Our cap and trim upgrade finishes the top of your fence with a 2×6 Western Red Cedar cap and 1×4 or 1×2 cedar trim. The cap adds weather protection along with a more polished look, and trim sizes can be customized.
Board on Board Fence
Board on board fencing overlaps the cedar pickets for full privacy and added durability, even as the wood moves over time. Pair it with cedar cap and trim for a more finished, high-end look.
Bull Wire and Wood Fence
Our bull wire fences pair heavy-duty 6-gauge wire with a wood frame and 1×4 Western Red Cedar trim, and the wire resists sagging over time. You can upgrade to galvanized steel or cedar posts, cedar rails, or a 2×6 cedar cap.
Custom Builds and Accents
Looking for something unique? We can customize your cap and trim sizes, upgrade to cedar backer rails that match the pickets, or choose a different width or style of Western Red Cedar picket. Browse lattice accents, bull wire accents, and privacy screens in our wood fence gallery.

What to Expect From Start to Finish
STEP ONE
Consultation & Design
We’ll start by walking your fence line with you to look at grade changes, existing landscaping, and gate placement. Then we’ll help you choose a style, post type, and any upgrades like cap and trim or cedar rails, and give you a detailed, no-obligation estimate so you know the scope and cost before any work begins.
STEP TWO
Installation & Completion
On installation day, our crew removes and hauls away your old wood fence if you have one, then sets the posts and builds out the frame, pickets, and trim. Depending on the site, the foreman may reuse existing post locations or dig new holes. If you have an irrigation system near the fence line, optional sprinkler coverage is available through our licensed irrigation partner, who handles repairs if a line is damaged during digging. To qualify, check your system before and after the install and report any damage within seven days.
STEP THREE
Installation & Quality Assurance
Our experienced crews complete every installation with precision and care, backed up by detailed project management to ensure everything meets our high standards — and your full satisfaction.
STEP FOUR
Ongoing Support & Peace of Mind
After installation, we’re still here for you. Whether you have questions about maintenance or future projects, our team is always available to ensure your fence continues to perform and look its best.
